Mr R M Jayasekara bade goodbye to Thurstan after 35 years of dedicated service in August 2007.

Mr R M JAYASEKARA

 Mr.R M Jayasekara

Mr R M Jayasekara bade goodbye to Thurstan after 35 years of dedicated service in August 2007.

Mr Jayasekara joined Thurstan in 1972 after completion of his tertiary education in Sri Jayawardanapura University . He was at the University in the turbulent period of the first Insurrection of 1971. This University was a hot bed of violent student agitation and many of his batch mates have shed those violent student politics and now in the main stream Political parties either holding or held Ministerial post on either side of the political divide.

I am sure knowing Mr Jayasekara he would not have been part of these radical student movement.

He commenced his teaching career at Thurstan during the tenure ship of Mr Pandithasekara as the Principal . Mr Pandithasekara was a very mild person; perhaps Mr Jayasekara has some of the mannerism traits of his first Principal . He served 5 Principal in his tenure at Thurstan and finally serving as the Principal for 10 months prior to his retirement. It would not be wrong to say that he was the solid pillar whom all them leaned to get the many things that a Principal has to do in running a school.

Mr Jayasekara’s appointment to Thurstan was to a give a boost to the Commerce section which has just commenced at Thurstan. He not only led from the front but his teaching skills enable many students to enter the Universities to follow courses in Management & Accountancy. Many of his students are now holding high positions in Universities, Mercantile & Government sectors and they in one voice are grateful to Mr Jayasekara for laying the foundation for their success.

But during the later stages at Thurstan he could not devote his time fully to teaching as he was involved as the Deputy Principal in the administration work in the school. This was clearly reflected, as the intake to Universities in the commerce stream showed a gradual decline from the highs of the 70’s & 80’s.

Mr Jayasekara was more or a less a permanent member of the Year 1 admission board for the last 3 decades. He was so familiar with the addresses of the locality he could more or less by instinct could say that from this address students are ‘admitted every year “!

The one aspect of Mr Jayasekara’s departure will create is his uncanny ability to remember names of say 80 % of the students who have gone through the portals of Thurstan during his tenure. During his long tenure he got to know Thurstanites of the “previous “generations also .Hence he has become “computer hard disk” of old Thurstanites. This is a void which cannot be easily filled.

During our period at Thurstan we had the late Lt Colonel Kingsley Fernando who also a fountain of knowledge of Thurstanites of the 50’s & 60’s. Both joined Thurstan as bachelors spent long hours at Thurstan, of course in Mr Fernando’s case he was the Master in charge of so many games. They were at certain stages, Teacher in charge of Prefects and Master in charge of Discipline. Both had the uncanny ability to interact with students and hence they were very popular among the students of their respective era.

Let me conclude this tribute to Mr Jayasekara.

Sir! Thank you for all you have done for Thurstan. Hope your tenure at Thurstan carries many fond memories! Let it not be a “ good bye “ but be “au revoir “ till we meet at the next Thurstan function.

May you be blessed with good health, happiness in your retirement. Hope you will be provided with avenues to get involved with Education activities in your leisure time

Priya Paranavitane

(Old Boy of the 50’s & 60’s)

A fitting tribute to our beloved friend Diyanesh Rajaratnam (died in March 1997)

A reservoir of legal knowledge, he shared it with all (Sunday Times – 25/03/07).

Ten years have passed so fast since Diyanesh passed away in March 1997.

After having attended Wesley College and Thurstan College , Diyanesh took to law in the family tradition and passed out as an Attorney-at-Law. He was one of the first to successfully complete the MBA programme at the University of Colombo. The mundane business of making money however attracted him little. This led him to join the Employers Federation of Ceylon and specialize in labour law.

Diyanesh was also a great sportsman and excelled in rugger and cricket. He was also a cricket commentator during the latter years of his short life that ended in 1997 when he was 44 years.

Those who knew Diyanesh will agree that there was something exceptional about him. He had a remarkable mind and he read and wrote widely. He was a gifted draftsman and an accomplished advocate. New or intricate legal points interested him. His uncanny and profound knowledge of the law coupled with his ability to direct one to an authority from memory was unusual.

He did not parade his knowledge but humbly shared it with all who sought his advice. He was known for his humanity and particularly helping little people who needed help. Diyanesh’s achievements speak for themselves and he brought an unparalleled degree of dignity, courtesy, fairness, candour and complete integrity to everything he did. His knowledge of the law was one matter. He could talk with authority on the classics, science, poetry, sports or whatever.

There is so much respect for Diyanesh’s pursuit of perfection. He demanded so much from himself and instilled into all who surrounded him that great yearning for perfection.

I write about Diyanesh now as he deserves to be remembered. Diyanesh was a great man and was a role model par excellence. “They who think that you are gone, Because no more your face they see,
Are wrong, for in our hearts you live And always will in memory”.

Our thoughts are with his beloved wife Devarani and his two wonderful daughters Dashanya and Dhanushka.

By Suresh Muthulingam

Sunil Karunanayake – Undoubtedly Diyanesh was a great Character and easily the most outstanding sportsman Thurstan produced.

Bathiya Seebert – Diyanesh, was a genius no doubt in all these fields, but what I personally felt as a senior of his at Thurstan, was his unlimited capacity for human interaction at all levels and the down to earth approach towards life itself. He, always, loved and lived his life up to his simple aspirations. I personally, along with many past Thurstanites who are regular visitors to my place after our Big Match for fellowship, have been missing him for the last ten years, with his very vibrant and melodically singing for which he himself gave the lead and enjoyed the music and the singing to the hilt very much. He, definitely will live in all our hearts for ever and our thoughts will always be with his family too.

Thurstan to celebrate rugby Golden Jubilee with schools sevens contest

Thurstan College will be celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year and an Inter School Rugby sevens tournament at the Royal Stadium on March 24 and 25 will herald the celebrations and will wind up with a Grand Rugby Dinner in July. The Tournament Committee for the event is headed by Chula Dharmadasa.

Thurstan began playing Rugby in 1956/57 but took part in active inter school matches only in 1958. The 1956 team was captained by Errol Van Twest, while in 1957 the captain was Surath Wickramasinghe. The inaugural Thurstan team in 1958 too was captained by Surath Wickremasinghe. Some of the stalwarts in this team were Jeff Ratnam who later on became a legend in Ceylon Rugby by captaining Air Force, Havelocks and Sri Lanka and became the first national coach of Sri Lanka. Undoubtedly he was one of the finest rugby players Sri Lanka has ever seen. Also in this team were well known sports writer par excellence T. M. K. Samat, Rafi Abdeen of boxing fame, Wigna Sellamuttu, late Shivantha Thambiah, late Anton Wickremaratne and the late Lionel Wickramasekera. The team was coached by Brian Mills.

However Thurstan stormed into prominence in 1963 with a team coached by the late Kavan Rambukwelle and captained by fiery wing forward, the late Deepal de Zoysa (CR and Kandy skipper). His co-wing forward was another classic player: Ranjit Jayawardena (Havelocks, University and Air Force) with Vernon Caldera (NCC) better known in the cricket circles occupying the no 8 position. Other stalwarts of this team were Dushyantha Samarasekera ( who captained CR), Sunil Jayakody ( who captained Dimbula), Srinath Gunasekera (who went on to captain University) and the late Indra Piyatissa.

Thurstan can also be proud of their contribution to national rugby coming from Harsha Mayadunne Dusyantha Samarasekera and Sunil Karunanayake serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively in the SLRFU. It is also noteworthy to mention that two of countrys leading rugby scribes T. M. K. Samat and Lal Gunasekera too represented Thurstan at rugby.

1963 was a memorable season for Thurstan where they lost only to Trinity and scored glorious victories over two of the strongest sides Royal and Zahira with Ranjit Jayawardena scoring two match winning tries in both these games. The match against S. Thomas’ at the Race Course was abandoned due to poor ground conditions.

Thurstan continued this trend and produced a rich crop of players like CR & FC stalwart Chula Dharmadasa, S. Karunathileke, Tissa Nanayakkara, Upul Pieris Kokum Seneviratne all of whom donned the national jersey with distinction. Other well known players were Sunil Jayakody (Dimbula), Wimal Kulatunga (CR) Mangala Ratnayake, Wasantha Perera, Sathyapriya Liyanage (All of Army), SSP Upali Hewage, Rohan Boudweyn (Dimbula), Harsha Mayadunne (Navy) and Ajanta Rodrigo (Police), Asela Weerasighe (Havelocks) and Charles Perera (CR).

Thurstan did well to clinch the Presidents trophy in 1998 under Nuwan Kumara who became a youth national cap and 2005 under Amila Eranga beat Isipathana to wrest the Jabar trophy for the first time in 38 years. In 2006 under the captaincy of Ishara Muthumala Thurstan won the first ever U20 Sevens trophy beating the reigning champions Isipathana College.
