THURSTAN – ISIPATHANA CRICKET MATCHES 2010

BIG MATCH – FEB 26TH & 27TH AT SSC

  • Thurstan had the Isipathana struggling at 87 for 5 at lunch one the 1st day and they recovered due to gritty knock by their Capt to score 221,
  • Thurstan were 91 fro 2 at close of play, but could not make any headway on the 2nd day & was all out for 168 by lunch. But Isipathans’s ace spinner Anushka Samaratunga was only able to capture 1 wicket, but now hold the Schoolboy for highest number of wickets for a season with 141 wickets.
  • Isipathana batted till few minutes after tea and declared at 135 for 5 and gave Thurstan to score 189 runs in 34 overs, which was a very sporting declaration.
  • But they never bargained for the run chase where Thurstan scored 175 for 3 with 5.2 overs  remaining to score 14 runs when umpires called off at 1804 h for bad light. But the irony was Isipathana were never warned for the slow over rate by the umpires where they bowled 19 overs prior to the mandatory overs in 90 min & only bowled 9.2 overs in the mandatory period in 54 min. IT WAS CASE YET SO CLOSE BUT STILL SO FAR.
  • Openers Udara Munasinghe [ 74 ], Supun Navaratna [ 65 ] broke the 1st wicket record established in 1972 by Diyanesh Rajaratnaem & Jayantha de Silva by associating in a partnership of 123 runs scored in only 102 min

LIMITED OVER MATCH AT P SARA OVAL- MARCH 7TH

  • It was tipsy turvy match with Thurstan scraping to win by 2 wickets
  • Isipathana batted first & were all out for 161 with skipper Tiwanka Ranasinghe again scoring 40 runs.Young Sachith Dias, the off spinner broke the Isipathana middle order capturing 4 wicket 22 runs
  • Thurstan replied with 161 for 8 with the wicket keeper batsman Supun Nawaratna holding the Innings together with a well compiled 58 runs after the two ace batsman Udara Munasinghe & Shihan Kamileen failed

TWENTY20 MATCH AT THURSTAN GROUNDS- MARCH 14TH
  • Thurstan batting first scored only 120 runs after being 99 for 2 at the completion of the 15th over. Skipper Shihan Kamileen scored an aggressive 52 runs in 43 balls & thus became the first batsman of either school to get a 50 in this format of the game
  • Thurstan were able to dismiss Isipthana for 110 runs in the 20th over, once again ace spinner Sachith Dias captured 3 wickets for 23 runs in his 4 overs
OLD BOYS TWENTY20 MATCH AT THURSTAN GROUNDS- MARCH 14TH
  • Thurstan scored a comfortable 6 wickets win by scoring 101 for 4 in only 15.4 overs in reply to Isipathana score of 97 for 9 in 20 overs

MOST POPULAR SCHOOLBOY CRICKETER OF THE UNDER 17 SCHOOL SEASON IN 2009

Sachith Dias was voted as the MOST POPULAR SCHOOLBOY CRICKETER OF THE UNDER 17 SCHOOL SEASON IN 2009 in a competition conducted by LAKBIMA PAPER.
Sachith and his identical twin brother Harith has been representing Thurstan from under 13,15 & 17. They both had their initial coaching under the guidance of Mr Nelson Mendis at CCC School of Cricket
Though both are small in stature and they are competent all rounders, Sachith is more a bowler & Harith a better batsman.
Sachith was drafted into the 1st XI as an off spinner and has been the highest wicket taker with 52 wicket which include the 5 wicket haul he captured at this year’s Big Match. Harith though he played a few matches had not been able to retain a permanent place in the strong Thurstan batting line up..
Much is expected from the “Dias Twins” in the 2010-11 season

THURSTAN COLLEGE 1ST XI CRICKET TEAM 2009-10 [Updated]

“Thurstan commenced the 2009/10 season on an impressive note under the new coach Aravinda Amarasekara, but could not maintained the same momentum throughout out the season.
Out of the 19 matches prior to the big match this weekend, they won 3 outright, won 7 on the 1st Innings & lost one outright and lost 7 on the 1st Innings wIth one no decision due to rain.
The feature of the season was Captain Shihan Kamileen became the first schoolboy this season to get to 1000 runs and soon followed by Udara Munasinghe who also topped the 1000 mark and this is a first for Thurstan where 2 batsmen topped the 1000 mark in a season.Kamileen also shared the bowling honours with Sachith Dias both taking 47 wickets a piece with their off spinners

This weekend Big match will be a keenly contested affair with the strong Thurstan batting facing a very penetrative Isipathana spin attack with Anushka Samaratunga who had captured 141 wickets and became the all time highest wicket taker in school cricket.

60th Anniversary,Founder’s Day Oration & Issue Of Commemorative Stamp

  • In a rare coincidence this year 2010, January 11th was the first day of the New Year of the school, when the present Principal Mr Wimal Gunaratne addressed the college Assembly as did Mr Earle Schokman addressed the 1st Assembly exactly 60 year’s ago on Jan 11th 1950. That day there were only 53 students present, but Thurstan has grown and now there are 2500 + students from year 1 to the Advance level; classes
  • This year the Founder’s day Oration also took place on January 11th morning when Professor Dr Mahinda Rupasinghe who is the current Vice Chancellor of the Sabaragamuwa University.addressed the Senior Students on the theme ” On how present Thurstanites should gain knowledge & leadership skills to equip themselves to be responsible Old Boy’s and contribute to the development of our beloved mother land”. Professor Rupasinghe is the 3rd Vice Chancellor from Thurstan. The annual Founder’s day Oration is organised by Thurstan 68/69 group and Professor also belong to this group.
  • To mark 60th Anniversary, a COMMEMORATIVE STAMP of value RS 10/= was issued by the Philatelic Bureau of the Department of Posts on January 11th at Temple Trees, where the stamp was cancelled and the Secretary of Post & Telecommunication Mr Chandra Jayatillaka presented the first Stamp to the President Hon Mahinda Rajapaksa. The issue of the Commemorative stamp which was readily approved by the distinguish Old Boy, the President is one of the series of events organized by the College with the Principal, Old Boy’s and Schools Development Society taking the lead. This simple function was held at Temple Trees in the presence of few Council Members of the OBU & SDS. The President was gracious enough allocate a few minutes between his busy election schedule.
  • The picture show the Principal handing over the First day Cover to the President with the Secretary Telecommunication, head of the Philatelic Bureau and Old boy’s ex DIG Upali Hewage, Chairman National Lotteries Development Board Mr Upali Liyanage and Mr Mithra Gankanda of the Ministry of Defense.
  • The other Photograph’ show the Stamp, the First Day Cover,Stamp Bulletin no 720 give the background details of the stamp and details of the issue itself

The President of Sri Lanka Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa

PRESIDENT OF SRI LANKA
HON MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA

Mahinda Rajapaksa joined Thurstan in 1957 to grade 6 classes. Prior to Thurstan he was at Nalanda & Richmond. Mahinda comes from a well-known family from the Deep South, the RAJAPAKSA?S, His father; the late Mr D A Rajapaksa was a founder member of the SLFP with the late Mr S W R D Bandaranaike. The mantle of the good work that his father began fell on Mahinda who was later joined by his elder brother Chamal and during his term as the 5th President by his Younger siblings Gotabhaya & Basil.
Mahinda at Thurstan was just another mischievous schoolboy, although he was the son of a Member of Parliament who some times traveled from SRAVASTI, the official residence of MP?s.
He was at the receiving end of the ire of our discipline master the late Mr Kingsley Fernando many a time. Mahinda was very fond of sports, he participated in athletics. Cricket & Rugby. At that young age he showed his prowess at public speaking, he was good & powerful debater. Mahinda Passed his OL & AL?s and left college in the mid sixties.
He worked for some time at the Vidyodaya Campus before he took to full time politics in the late 1960?s and was elected as the youngest Parliamentarian in 1970 when the SLFP was swept into Parliament.
Being a backbencher he did the wisest thing by enrolling himself in the Law College and passed out as an Attorney. When he was unseated in 1977 he began a very successful & lucrative practice as a lawyer with a large clientele.
Not only did he practice diligently at courts, at this time his roving eye met I believe the pretty lady who had won the Miss Sri Lanka Contest a few year?s back and made her his wife in 1983. As the saying goes ?behind a successful man there is a woman ?and his wife Shiranthi has being a source of strength in his political life.
They are blessed with 3 son?s who has outshone the father in sports, all three being versatile rugby players who have played with distinction and captained their school, St Thomas? Mt Lavinia the elder even leading the Sri Lanka Under 19 team. One significant aspect is that when the son?s of other politicians have used the political power of the father to indulge in mischief, the Rajapaksa boy?s have behaved roll model of good public behaviour.

He made a significant contribution to bring PA back to power in 1994 and was rewarded with Cabinet portfolio and thus became the first Thurstanite to hold Cabinet rank. When the OBU felicitated him after he resumed office, the demand was such that all tickets were snapped up within 4 days and we had to disappoint many, those were the days when many who did not openly say they were old boy?s of Thurstan, identified themselves as Thurstanites
Mahinda has crowned himself as a Cabinet Minister and his work at Labour & Fisheries has been much appreciated by the public at large & the officials.
Mahinda has always identified himself as a THURSTANITE even though he had his primary education both at Richmond & Nalanda. If ever time permitted he never refused an invitation to attend any College function & has helped college and the furnishing the College hall with a set chairs costing over a million rupees was a testimony of his love for his alma mater.
Mahinda was honoured with the title ? SRI ROHANA RAJANA ?by the Buddhist prelates in 2000 for his vast popularity with the masses and also being a devoted worker. He is the second person to be honoured by the prelates, first being the late Premier Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
In the year 2001 Mahinda was elected as the Leader of the Opposition as the majority felt that he is the person who could give leadership to the parties in the Opposition
At the conclusion of the election held on April on April 2nd , Mahinda was one of the two SLFPers who were able to win the District while in all other districts which the United People’s Freedom Alliance won, it was the Members of the JVP who topped the list.
He was also the highest percentage wise of the polls received for an individual for a district in the whole Island.
For his dedicated service to the party for well over 35 years, which his father, the late D A Rajapaksa was instrumental in forming with the late Premier S W R D Bandaranaike he was elevated to the position of Prime Minister in April 2004.

The biggest contribution he made to College was that he gave the leadership role in the Fund Raising THURSTAN WALK held in October 2004.Not only much donation was obtained from the Corporate world due to his Chairmanship; he also flagged off the walk & walked the complete route. At one point he stood and watched the participants passed by which was much appreciated by all.
The funds raised by this project helped the OBU to complete the Cricket ground.

The nadir of Mahinda?s political career was when he was elected as the 5th President of Sri Lanka on November 17th on the eve of his 60th birthday which fell on November 18th. This was also not an easy task. Mahinda who has been a fighter all his life first managed to get nomination from his party amidst lot of in-fighting and used all his political acumen and formed the right coalition of many parties and projected his Vision for Sri Lanka in the form of ? Mahinda Chinthanaya ?, which was endorsed by the masses. This was a practical & pragmatic approach to the many problems faced by Sri Lankan’s.

During his tenure of office he gave the leadership to eradicate the  biggest problem Sri Lanka faced, the LTTE terrorism. While eliminating terrorism he build the infrastructure for the economic emancipation of Sri Lanka by the construction of Harbours, Airports, Generation of Electricity, Road Network, Large Reservoirs, Rebuilding the devastated North & East and the structure to be self sufficient to daily food needs. He did not forget the heroic soldiers who were incapacitated in the war and provided many of them with housing and training to live a normal life by providing them with vocational training.

As a true son of Thurstan, he did not forget his alma mater. He gave the land next to the Cricket ground, to construct a Rugby ground

Now he went before the electorate when he had another 2 years his term and was given a resounding mandate on January 26th to carry out the programmed outlined in ?Chinthanaya  Ediri Dakama?

He now has huge task ahead and let us wish that he will make use of his 40 + years of political experience and his practical and mundane approach will resolve the many complex issues that we as a nation face.
I am sure he will not forget THURSTAN and her development amidst his many other demanding schedules.

Thurstan Rugby Stadium Project launched

It was day of great joy and historical significance for Thurstan when they launched their Rugby development project at a colourful ceremony attended by Minister of Sports and Recreation Gamini Lokuge and Namal Rajapaksa, President of the Tharunyata Hetak Organization at the Thurstan Park, Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha on Friday Dec 4th 2009.

It was a dream comes true for this intrepid school that was badly hampered due to lack of their own grounds for Rugby. As quoted by veteran scribe T.M.K. Samat better known in boxing circles the beginning was in 1957 when some boys got together and played around sans participation in official tournaments.

The year 1957 was the first official year of Thurstan Rugby and the honour of being the first Captain went to Surath Wickremasinghe who also captained the team in 1958, fitting Surath was a distinguished invitee and had the privilege of cutting the first sod along with other distinguished guests.

Namal Rajapaksa in his speech tracing his Rugby roots elaborated his commitment to Rugby and expressed his satisfaction on the manner the recent Carlton Sevens tournament was conducted.

He also recalled that his father President Mahinda Rajapaksa?s involvement in Rugby during his school days at Thurstan.

President Rajapaksa was a leading member of Thurstan?s champion school athletic team in 1960/61 and also had a brief stint with Rugby but continued to concentrate on athletics that was close to his heart.

With the development of the proposed Rugby ground Thurstan is bound to be a force to be reckoned with as they no longer will have to do nomadic rounds seeking venues for practices and matches.

Despite the handicap of not having grounds Thurstan over the last half a century had produced an array of eminent Rugby players and administrators at the highest level making a noble contribution to the game.

Jeff Rutnam who played from 1957 to 59 had the honour of leading Ceylon to its first ever international victory over Paris University Club.

The architect behind the Rugby development and Revival DIG (Rtd) Upali Hewage also a member of the Rugby Interim Committee who has been a tower of strength behind Thurstan Rugby for nearly three decades.

In his vote of thanks he expressed his gratitude to the President for initiating to provide a block of land for the ground and also paid a glowing tribute to the Minister of Sports Gamini Lokuge in helping the proposed development.

Even though large number of schools have taken up to Rugby in the last few years there has not been any increase of Rugby grounds in Colombo for past several decades. This is a major dilemma faced by the schools as well as emerging smaller clubs.

Hence the entry of Thurstan Rugby ground will be a significance boost to the development of Rugby in Sri Lanka, close proximity to the Rugby Union Headquarters too will be a positive factor.

My Rugby days at Thurstan by – Mangala Ratnayake

My Rugby days at Thurstan by – Mangala  Ratnayake

Thurstan rugby’s Golden era was when we had the Team with illustrious names like Ranjith Jayawardena,Deepal Zoysa,Lional Wickremasekara,Dushyantha Samarasekera to name a few ,when we beat Royal college for the first time, and I think went through unbeaten. I will write this article more as a historical record of events and people involved during my time.

My first year of Rugby was 1965, Indra Piyatissa captained  the team, SSM Gunasekera, Lal Kumarage,DAT Alwis, Nihal Dharmadasa, Graetian Gunawardhana, G.Wedagedara, K.L.Perera, Mahinda Wijeyaratna, Sunil Jayakody, Lalith Peris,Wasantha  Perera, E S C Fernando, were the  regulars in the team There were others like Nandalal Jayawardena,K.Maligaspe ,Arthur,WPW Perera ,Upali Liyanage who were in and out of the team from time to time. The team was coached by Kavan Rambukwella, and Mr Joe Fernando was the master in charge. We had a reasonable year winning most matches and losing some narrowly.

1966 was a tough year for our Rugby, most of the seniors had left Sunil Jayakody was the captain. I was his deputy, we lost our grounds (CR &FC), so we were allowed to practice twice a week in the CR &FC  hockey grounds, the rest of the days we had to use Brownrigg Park [ present the college & ground of Sirimavo Vidyalaya ], we had no regular coach and A R M Faiza  helped with the team sometimes. We had an enthusiastic bunch of freshers who joined the team like Tissa Nanayakkara, Hemantha Devapura, Jayantha Dias, Milinda Ratnayake, ST Fernando, P.Harrison, L.Wijekoon, Upali Hewage, P.Athukorale. The senior players had the added responsibility of coaching and mentoring the junior players.

I  captained  the team in 1967, I had Tissa Nanayakkara as deputy.Mr K.Wijedasa was the master in charge. Of the seniors,G.Wedagedara, GW Perera, Upali Liyamage, Milinda Ratnayake, H.Devapura , Upali Hewage, G Athukorala.  U.Jayasingha remained and the newcomers were Kanthi Senaratna, Niroshan de Silva, H.Bouydwin.

We had mixed results, lost narrrowly to Zahira (5-3) and lost the inaugural match for the Abdul Jabbar shield with Isipathana (6-3), which we could have won had Tissa Nana converted 4 missed penalty kicks. We beat St Marys, Beat Wesly college (13- nil) and held Royal to a draw( 6-6), We beat St Anthony’s Kandy (11-9) lost badly to St. Peters (22 nil).

A word about the second string- There were some outstanding boy?s, who turned up for training without fail, and for their sheer enthusiasm needs to be  mentioned – Suranimala Abeygoonesekara, Mohan Karunaratna, Gamini Thilakasiri, Palitha Harrison ,STK Fernando, Kumar Devapura to mention a few

It is well documented that so many players from this period went on to represent  clubs,  defence services and Police.

Whether the team was winning or loosing, there were some faithful supporters who always turned up for our matches, Priya Paranavitane, Bhathiya Seebert and Upali Ahangama were always around to support the team. From the staff Mr  Joe Fernando was always present. The new Principal Mr. PM Jayathilake encouraged and supported rugby, encouraged students and staff to attend important matches. In our days building a team was a real problem, as we lost most of the players when we got the GCE OL results and we had to start from scratch again.

On a lighter note it was standard practice for the players go across to Thurstan caf [ now named as Raheema ] for a feed or walk to Mayfair at Bamba for ‘Elu katu soup’ as that was all we could afford as students. (Thosay was 5 cents, soup was 20 cents).Sometimes the waiters could be seen running behind the players to collect the bills!

My Rugby days at Thurstan by – Gamini Thilakasiri Ranasingha

My Rugby days at Thurstan by – Gamini Thilakasiri Ranasingha

I was introduced to Rugby by one of my class mates Lalith Samaranayaka. I had no idea what so ever about the game. I started towards the tail end of the season and managed to play two games in the 2nd XV. That was in 1966 when Sunil Jayakody was our 1st XV captain.

The following year we were left  with a few old players in the 2nd XV and a few of us making an impression. The year started under Mangala Rathnayaka as the captain and 2nd XV with no captain. It was not officially announced. The boys thought I was eligible and L. Gulawita thought he was the most popular guy. Our first match of the season was with Wesley ? we ran on to the field thinking that I was the captain. Guluwita thought that he was going to be the captain. I ran ahead of him and he ran past me to be the first. We both sprinted to the field leaving behind the rest of the team, which would have looked hilarious. As my position was scrum half I had a better control of the game where as Gulawita was in the wing. Anyway we managed to beat Wesley College 3 nil, which was, I suppose, the more important fact!!

Later that season I was chosen to play in the 1st XV with Rohan Boudwyn as the fly half.

We were very unfortunate with no home grounds to practice and facing many difficulties. Nevertheless Indra Piyatissa, T N Cutilan and Dushyantha Samarasekara came to our aid and coached us. It was of tremendous help to our team and D.Samarasekara managed to get us into CR & FC grounds for training. When we practiced at common Brownrigg Park [ Present college & ground of Sirimavo Balika Vidyalya] there was no running water and no dressing rooms etc. On many occasions Dilip Gunewardana who lived in Brownrigg Park used to connect a garden hose outside his house for us to drink water and wash ourselves up after training, since most of our Rugby players travelled from outer city and had long distances to return to their homes.

In later years I managed to help organize Rugby at Thurstan with Nanayakkara brothers, Mangala Ratnayaka, Dushy Samarasekara, Vipula Dharmadasa and Basil Rodrigo as coaches. That was the period that we introduced the Old boys vs. Present boys match played for the shield donated by Kumar Devapura in 1986.

The Rugby which was introduced and taught to me by Lalith Samaranayaka, Indra Piyatissa, T N Cutilan, Upali Ahangama, Dushyantha Samarasekara and Tony Sirimanne ? I have passed on to my sons who love the game and play it well at club level and for the State of Victoria in Australia.

Thanks to the continued support of our old boys, our College and everyone involved in keeping the Thurston flag flying high.
