Thurstan College has been blessed over the years with dedicated staff who have become more than teachers to their young students. This has resulted in students achieving academic success in the examinations conducted by the Education Ministry in Sri Lanka and proceeding to Universities and Higher Educational Institutes in Sri Lanka and Overseas. The facilities at College range from modern Science laboratory facilities, Computer laboratories to libraries, which are equipped with the most recent publications of books, journals and periodicals.

College is well known not only for its high academic standards but also, for their achievements in Sports and excellence in Extra Curricular Activities. The College has more than 30 clubs and societies, which gives students an opportunity to gain knowledge in various disciplines and also show their hidden talents and skills at public forum. They also give an opportunity for students to show their leadership capabilities. Thurstan is well known for it’s achievements for sports and has a Junior & a Senior play ground, a Swimming pool, tennis courts and other sports facilities for students. The College believes in producing all round students, well trained to overcome the trails & tribulations at the world at large. Some of the sports played are Cricket, Rugby, Tennis, Table Tennis Badminton and Chess.

Rich in traditions and equipped with all the modern facilities needed for a College, Thurstan is no doubt one of the best Colleges in the island.

History

Tennis at Thurstan commenced during the period of late Mr M.D Gunawardeena in 1963 with able backing from Mr. Joe Frenando who was the vice principal. Both these gentlemen were tennis players of repute during their youth. Due to their enthusiasm they were able to tap influential parents and one such was late Mr. Erick Rajapakse who was then the president of the SLTA.  Mr. Erick Rajapaksa's 2 children Rohan and Tito to date remain as two of the finest tennis players produced by Thurstan. The first tennis court to Thurstan college was donate by Mr. L.G Seebert, father of distinguished old boy Mr. Bathiya Seebert.

Mr. Rohan Rajapakse  captained Thurstan's first ever tennis team at the prestigious public school tourney and later went on  to become the junior national champion. Some of the others who emerged during this era were, Sarath and Ayal Jayathilaka, Mahinda Senevirathana , Ravindra De livera, Late Devinda Walgampitiya, Dinuke Abegunewardena, Ajith Serasinghe, Malinda Ratnayka and Dr. Dilip De Silva to name of few. Sarath, Mahinda, Dinuke and Malinda continue to be in active tennis by representing their respective clubs.

Mr. Gunawardena's good work was continued the after by Mr P.M Jayathilaka who was instrumental in obtaining the services of the late Melville Grenier   and Nevill Senarathana (another old Thurstanite now a full time professional coach in UK). The annual tennis social and the dual with Royal college Colombo 7 were much looked after events at this stage

Following a lengthy period of inactivation Thurstan tennis was reactivated once again during the period of principal Mr. R.D.M.P Weerathunga, with Rohan Rajapakse and Dinko Abeygunewardena ( then SLTA assistance secretary) throwing their full weight to give birth to old Thurstanite's tennis club (OTTC) annual inter house tennis tournament  and the annul dual with Trinity College Kandy for the Erick Rajapakse trophy. Services rendered by Erick Rajapakse and Co. Ltd, in this events are noted with appreciation . Yet another significant feature during this period was the donation of  another tennis court by Mr. Palitha Dalpatatadu a live wire behind the OTTC.

During the late 90s OTTC played an active part in the SLTA inter club tennis tournaments with players in the caliber of   Dinuke Abeygunawardena, Mahinda Seneviratne, Priya Paranawithana, Bathiya Seebert, Milinda Rathnayaka, Anil Weerakkody, Palitha Dalpatatadu and Sirosha Gunathilaka doing the honors 

Tennis is one of most active sports played at Thurstan College with more than 100 students attending practices every week. Three tennis courts, tennis playing principal, willing support from tennis loving old boys is a luxury most school boys in other school do not  enjoy.

Thurstan was the second government school to take to rugby and from the inception started playing with all leading teams. HISTORY OF CRICKET AT THURSTAN

                                                             
• Commencement & the person responsible

Thurstan commenced playing cricket in 1953 when the first eleven comprising many under 16ners were pitted against the 2nd IX of leading Colombo Schools. Thurstan was fortunate that it’s first Principal Mr. Earle Schokman was an ardent cricket fan and gave what ever assistance to uplift the game at Thurstan. His passion for the game even extended to giving the latest cricket updates on test matches played in Australia over the public address system.
By early sixties Thurstan were playing first eleven cricket against all leading Colombo schools.
In the early sixties when the Nationalized Schools Cricket Association [ NSCA] toured Australia, 4 Thurstanites went on three of these tours.

• Traditional fixtures

Thurstan play Isipathana in their Annual Big Match. The match against Isipathana commenced in 1964 and was elevated to a big match status in 1968 and is now played for the Blackham Wijewardana Trophy. It has been played continuously annually except in 1971 when the insurgency broke out and the match had to be cancelled. Thurstan lead the series 5 matches to 4 with the rest being drawn. Out of this 5 wins, 3 came in consecutive years 1990-92 when Thurstan had dream run
In the Limited over series which commenced in 1981 where it is played for the W A de Silva Memorial Trophy, Isipathana lead Thurstan 13 matches to 11 and Thurstan had been successful in winning the last 7 matches in a trot
The Mini big match is played for the P M Jayatillake Trophy while the under 15 match is played for the D D Jayasinghe Trophy
Thurstan play 1st XI cricket with all leading schools in Colombo & Outstation except Ananda.
They are Royal, St Thomas’s Mt Lavinia, St Peter’s, St Joseph’s, Nalanda, Wesley, Zahira, D S Senanayake, Lumbini, Maris Stella, St Anthony’s Kandy, Maliayadeva, St Anne’s Kurunagala & Mahinda Galle
Thurstan Won the Lemonade trophy six-a-side tournament organized by Wesley College in 1995.
 

• Number of teams
Thurstan has the 1st IX, 2nd IX, Under 16, Under 14 [ 2 teams ], Under 12 [ 3 teams]
The college ground which has a matting wicket where matches of Under 13 to 2nd XI are played. It has 3 concrete practice wickets. 1st XI matches are played at outside venues
Thurstan is now developing their grounds at Bauddhaloka Mawatha to play 1st XI cricket on Turf wickets in 2005
 

• Players
Thurstan has over the years has produced a number of cricketers who shone at School level but only a few went on to play at National level.
The first Thurstanite to attain National status was Amitha de Costa who represented
Ceylon against England in 1973 in an UNOFFICIAL TEST. This was followed after more than 2 decades when Niroshan Bandaratilleke played against New Zealand in 1999.
Hemantha Boteju who captained College in 1995 at the age of 17 years showed as an outstanding all rounder in his 5 year career as a Schoolboy, perhaps the best ever all rounder produced by Thurstan had the honour of representing Sri Lanka in an ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL against India & Pakistan.
Perhaps the best Cricketer in the 50's was the late Shunith Goonetilleke a stylish wicket Keeper batsman who later played for the University and he was the " walking Wisden " and Upali Ahangama who captained College in 1960 will come close to him as an authority on Sri Lanka Cricket . Upali had the honour of coaching his alma mater for nearly 25 years with a break in the late 70's when he attended the Alf Gower School of coaching in England. He also was the acting Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket when Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996.
Undoubtedly the Best Batsman produced by Thurstan was the late Diyanesh Rajaratnam who played for College between 1968-72. He was the nemesis of many a schoolboy bowlers and perhaps the highlight of his career was the blistering knock of 204 Not Out against a much fancied Prince of Wales attack in 1971. Coming close is the unbeaten knock of 68 in 55 min against Isipathana in 1972 which almost snatched victory for Thurstan when Isipathana asked Thurstan to chase 111 runs for victory in 60 minutes and they ended up at 104 for 1 when a crowd invasion deprived Thurstan of a certain victory. He was also the first Thurstanite to tour with the Sri Lanka Schools team when he went to India in late 1969. This tour had many schoolboys who later donned the Sri Lanka Cap, but Diyanesh did not have this honour though he scored many runs in Sara Trophy cricket.
Diyanesh represented Board Presidents against Hongkong and Malaysia., Sri Lanka trialist and was shadow keeper to Russel Harmer.
Later Diyanesh became a much sought after Cricket & Rugby commentator until the cruel fate of death snatched him away in 1997. His elder brother Sureshchandra who played for College in 1964-65 is now a regular cricket broadcaster over air waves of SLBC
A team mate of Diyanesh at College, Saliya Wijewardana went on to become a deadly medium pacer at Sara level and bagged many wickets in the 70's but could not achieve National honours.
Saman Akarwita who was a fine exponent of the Chinaman was the next Thurstanite to tour with the Sri Lanka Schools when he tour England in 1975.
Ajit Kodituwakku and Suhada Fernando played for Sri Lanka Schools in 1978
In the late 90's saw Hemantha Boteju being an automatic choice for Sri Lanka Schools in that period. Hemantha showed his prowess as a batsman when he completed twin hundreds against St Thomas's Mt Lavinia in 1995 which followed the century he scored the previous year to save Thurstan from a certain defeat. Thus he scored 3 consecutive centuries and all them at Mt Lavinia. That season he scored 207 Not Out against St Anthony's Wattala at Municipal grounds. This was the highest score by a Thurstanite eclipsing the 204 Not Out scored by Diyanesh . He was followed by Nisal Randika Gamage who captained College in 2001 representing Sri Lanka Schools, perhaps the Thurstanite who had toured most number of times with the Schools team. The last addition to this is Damith Indika who captained College in 2003 represented Schools at Under 17 in Bangaladesh and Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand in 2002
Hemantha's 207 was bettered by Thilina Masmulla last season when he scored 273 Not out against St Sylvester's Kandy on the small Thurstan grounds
Other Thurstanites who were regular in the Club seen are as follows
Jayalath Aponso [ 1970-71 ] Captained Nomads for nearly 10 years in the 80's-90's.
Mahinda Seneviratne [ 1962-63 ] played and Captained Panadura in the 70's & 80's & was Club President for number of years and was in the BCCSL EXCO
Sathya Jayasuriya who captained College in 1981 played for BRC in 80's & 90's
Deepal Madurapperuma [ 1978-80 ] Nomads / SSC / BRC/CCC for almost 20 years from 1980
Two of the Principals of Thurstan had the honour of being the President of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association [ SLSCA ], namely Mr P M Jayatileke in 1969 & the present Principal Mr R D M P Weerathunge 2003 & 2004. The present master-in-charge of Cricket Mr Nihal Fernando is the current Tournament secretary for schools Under 14 since 2002

The Thurstan College or the Management Committee of the pool or Administration Staff will not be liable

A user of the pool or to any other person in the precincts of the pool for any damages arising from any personal injury however caused or,

The dependent, parent or guardian of any user of the pool or any or other person in the precincts of the pool in the event of death of such a person, however

caused, whilst in the pool are or in the precincts of the pool or,

For the safe keeping of valuables of the user of the pool or anyone accompanying them. The Management Committee will endeavor to provide lockers but not will not be responsible for any losses.

Not withstanding any of the above the rules and regulations, The Management Committee reserves to it self the right to amend, delete or add there to from time to time, any changes deemed necessary for the efficient administration of the swimming pool to ensure optimum benefit to its members or for any other reason.

The implementation of such changes may be effected directly by the Management Committee or through the Manager or any other authorized representative.

The pool will be closed on following Holidays

    Introduction

    1. The Manager appointed by the Principal and Management Committee. will be responsible for the administration of the day today functions of the Swimming Pool.
    2. Any persons who wishers to obtain membership should on apply on the prescribed form available at the office. Duly completed application forms should be handed over to the pool office.
    3. The use of the Swimming Pool would be exclusively for members and their guests.
    4. All prospective members shall read through and understand all the rules and regulations set out herein and their obligation for compliance if accepted for membership
    5. Applications for student membership From students of Thurstan College, should be approved by the principal or his authorized representative.
    6. From students of other schools, should be recommended and signed by the principal of the respective school.
    7. The entry fees are are payable on approval together with the applicable subscription
    8. Acceptance of applications for membership will be solely at the desecration the Management Committee, who also reserves the right to terminate the membership of ay member for non – compliance with laid down rules and regulations or for any for other reason.
    9. After its scrutiny and approval a membership card will be issued once applicable fees and 2 stamps size photographs are submitted. This card will carry name of the member, member no, Category and Signature, Date of Expiry and will carry a photograph of the member. In the case of Family membership a card will be issued  to each member of that unit, whilst in the case of group membership, a specific number of cards will be issued to organization limiting the number of users of the facility per day.
    10. Membership of all categories other than Life Membership is renewable annually before the date of Expiry. In the event of annual membership subscription not being paid, member will not be permitted to use the facility. Those members who are 3 months in arrears would have their membership terminated automatically. Such members may be permitted to rejoin only at the sole discretion of the  Management Committee and on repayment of the entry fee and settlement of outstanding arrears.
    11. The  Management Committee reserves the light to revise the entry fee and the annual membership subscription rates without notice.
    12. In the event a membership card is lost / misplaced or damaged the member should immediately  inform the Manager in writing. to prevent misuse of such a card.
    13. A nominal charge will be levied for the issue of fresh card.

    Operational Information and Guideline
     
     
    The Pool will be open to members as follows :
     
    Monday to Friday –  6.00 a.m. 9.00 a.m.  –  4.00 p.m. 8.00 p.m.
    Saturdays Sundays – 6.00 a.m. 1.00 p.m.  –  2.00 p.m. 8.00 p.m.
    and Public Holidays
     

    The Facility may be closed to members occasionally when swimming meets and other events are held. No individual intimation will be sent to members but, general notice will be displayed at the pool office and or within the pool complex.

    The membership card should be produced to the manager or his authorized representative and the member should be sign his/ her name in the register kept for that for that on every occasion of use of the pool.

    Students members will not be permitted within the pool or its 6premises after 6.00 p.m. unless accompanied by a parent, Guardian or coach. Such parent guardian or coach will be required to accompany the student member in the pool or allow the student member to swim at the parents, guardians or coach sole risk. The Pool Management will not accept liability for any accident or injury to the member.

    All Schools making use of the group scheme should have their own teacher in charge and a qualified instructor present at all times. Utilization of the pool facilities will be by prior appointment and the discretion of the Management Committee.

    An adult member may be accompanied by guests up to maximum of 2 persons on the payment of the applicable guest ticket charges. It will be the responsibility of the member to ensure that such guest adhere to the laid down rules & regulations. Guest should also leave with the member who introduces them. Students Members are not permitted to bring the guests.

    Persons suffering from any infectious decease of epilepsy or having any open or bandaged wounds or suffering from eczema or any skin diseases or a running cold should not use the pool. In the event of any member violating this rule, the Manager or  his authorized representative will have the authorization to request such member to vacate the pool immediately. The Management Committee reserves the right to ask any user to produce a medical certificate from a Medical practitioner by the Committee, to prove such members fitness.

    Every user of the pool shall properly soap and shower before entering the pool and be clad in a proper and clean swimming costume every person with long hair shall wear cap while in the pool.

    Members or their guest should not change cloths on the terrace but, should use the dressing rooms for that purpose.

    The Management Committee has Authorized the Manager and the Staff the right to refuse a member or guest.

     

     

     

    HISTORY OF SWIMMING AT THURSTAN
     
       

    Swimming as a sport was formally started at Thurstan in year 1962 under the guidance of the principal the late Mr.M.D.Gunawardane who introduced many new sports to Thurstan. The Thurstan College Swimming Club was formed in the same year and the first Master-In-Charge cum coach was the late Mr. Edison Silva who was also Master-In-Charge ofscouting at the same time. The first Secretary of the club was Mr.Bhathiya Seebert

    Swimming classes were conducted twice weekly at St.Joseph’s Swimming Pool and thurstan took part in all leading all island school & Public School Swimming meets that were held in the early and mid nineteen sixties. They also fielded relay & diving teams. During this period Thurstan produced many champion swimmers & divers of repute at that time like Gavin Amarasingha, Gamini Samarasingha, K.D Rohana and Ranjith Chandrasakara to name few. Among all of them Gavin Amarasingha was most out standing. Gavin set and held many records to his credit at the time including the best time for 1760 yards event in the national swimming meet in the year 1964 and he also become the 440 yards Public School champion in the same year. He also created history by winning the first every sea swim held in Sri Lanka both in the 2 mile and 6 mile in the years 1963 and 1964 which feat he repeated for many years

     Few years later Mr. Edison Silva went on transfer and Mr.Wijedasa, Mr.Soysa Mr.Boderagama Mr.Fonseka and Mr.Senavirathne took over as Master-In-Charge. After the pioneer batch of swimmers left school swimming at thurstan had a lean period where Ravi Livera excelled in the sixties

     In the year 1985 swimming at Thurstan was revived mainly due to the enthusiasm shown by Mr.Jagath

    Development of Thurstan College Ground at Bauddhaloka Mawatha

    Development of Thurstan College Ground at Bauddhaloka Mawatha

     

    You may be aware that Thurstan has been given 5 acres and 20 perches of the
    most prime real estate in Sri Lanka for its playground. This is situated in
    the heart of Colombo 7 and at conservative estimate of Rs. 2 million a
    perch, it is worth more than 1680 million rupees (840 perches). We have had
    title possession of this ground for the last 8 years. During this period we
    have cleared the side developed to ground to play rugby only after spending
    nearly 6 million rupees. To have a good cricket playing area, we need to
    have an underground drainage system, as the water table is very high and the
    level of the ground is below the road level as in most grounds in this area.
     

    The estimate for the re-development of the ground, which is phase one of

    this program is as follows. Phase 2 will be construction of a Pavilion
    ,Thurstanites Club House and phase 3 and Indoor Gymnasium to play badminton,
    basket ball, squash etc,

    We commenced this task with less than half the amount with us in the express
    belief that Thurstanites both locally and abroad will rally round to find
    the Rs. 6 millions that we are short.  This is done under the design and
    super vision of old boy engineer Nihal Sooriarachchi of the central
    engineering consultancy bureau( CECB) and the contractor water and
    engineering private limited  The strategy to find the funds is as follows,
    We want this to be a team effort of all Thurstanites, where the contributors
    could be proud that they too were involved in this project.

    * 600 old boys in Sri Lanka to contribute at Rs. 5000 each = 3000000

    * 150 old boys living abroad to contribute at USD. 200 each = 3000000

    Current Situation

     

    We have completed the construction of the centre turf and matting wickets together with side practice wickets. The space construction of the peripheral drain is almost completed together with toilet blocks. We are in the midst of filling of the ground with earth.

     

    Due to the lukewarm response of old boys, due to lack of funds we have decided to do away with the constructions of the underground drainage system which would have cost Rs. 2 million.

     

    We are in need of another Rs. 3 million to plant grass and complete phase one of the project.

     

    We have collected only approximately Rs. 2 million from about 150 old boys both in Sri Lanka and abroad. Our target was Rs. 6 million. This money collected will be used for  filling and leveling.

     

    Hence to complete the balance another Rs. 3 million is needed. We appeal to our old boys who have not yet contributed, to lend a helping hand so that we could complete and make the ground available for playing in end of 2004.
