History Thurstan College - Profile

COLLEGE FOUNDERS

Thurstan School was dawned with the end of the world war two. That was in nineteen forties. It was not started as a result of free education concept brought by famous scholar and minister of education Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara. Thurstan School could be introduced as an institution of technical education, started after gaining political independence in Sri Lanka from the British rule. Thurstan was planted in an educationally rich soil. On one side was one and a half century years old Royal College and on the other side was the Colombo Campus which was of similar age. The location is a significant feature.

Reverend father A. J. Thurstan started a private technical school in 1859 in this beautiful environment and maintained it out of his own funds. This institution had been a agricultural and multimedia technical training centre for many years but had to be closed down after a few years. In 1884 with the assistance of the British Government an agricultural school was started in the same place. There was historical evidence to show that around this agricultural school there had been a flourishing cinnamon cultivation, and today Colombo 7 is known as Cinnamon Gardens due to this cultivation. The agricultural school was started by the then Director of Education Mr. H. W. Green. In 1910 it was closed down.

There was a problem of space faced by Royal College and there was a need for another school for those students who could not gain admission to Royal. This problem went up to then Premier D. S. Senanayake and he suggested to occupy the buildings left vacant due to the shiftily of the teacher training school to Maharagama.

A new School was opened by then Minister of Education by Mr. E. A. Nugewela on January 11th, 1950 named as government Senior School at Thurstan road. There were 26 students who entered the grade one, to grade six 112 students were enrolled. There are all who passed grade 5 at Royal College. The principal of the new school was Mr. D. E. A. Shokman. During his term he tried to raise the standard of the school curriculum in many ways. Making use of the experience at Kingswood College Kandy with his ideas about high schools he introduced a house system for sports, student leadership (Prefects), cadetting, and literary associations not second to a high school which gained high standards in sports, literacy etc. over many years. He named the houses after the for directors of Education during British rule namely Denham, Macrey, Robison and Sandeman. The first Sports meet was held under the patronage of Dr. H. W. Howes, CMG, Director of Education on Saturday the 9th of February 1952. The teacher in charge of sport was Mr. Kingsly Fernando. Inter house champions were Robison House.

The Giant Killers were tamed by Ananda last Saturday.

The Giant Killers were tamed by Ananda last Saturday.

Thurstan were restricted 140 runs in the 50 overs with One boy ? Udara Maunasinghe holding the fort with a gutsy 72 runs with non of the famed batting line up giving him support where another 30 runs would helped the cause. There were  two inexpiable run outs which added to the confusion. But all credit to Ananda Spinners who throttle the Thurstanites after they got off to flyer with 42 of 0 wickets in 8 overs.

Thurstan at one stage had Ananda cornered with 80 for 5 with 14 overs to get the balance 60 runs, but few drop catches & couple for run outs missed and some sensible batting by Ananda saw them through.

Thurstan Under 17 B team also had reached the semi finals & will meet Royal B and the match will be played either Thursday or Friday this week. Last year the B team became Champions in the tournament.

THURSTAN COLLEGE WAR HEROES MONUMENT/MEMORIAL

War heroes monument in memory of all Thurstanites in Armed forces & Police who sacrificed their levies to safeguard & preserve the territorial’s integrity of our motherland

3D

NATION’S TRIBUTE TO OUR WAR HEROES

Quite a large number of Thurstanites are currently serving the armed Forces and the Police with the primary responsibility of safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our motherland.  They are engaged in severe confrontations with the separatist terrorists in the north of the Island placing even their lives at stake on behalf of the country and the people. Some old boys of our dearest alma mater have bravely made their supreme sacrifice in battle against the terrorists and have contributed immensely in safeguarding the motherland in order to create a better future for you and me alike.

In order to recognize the valour and service by the fallen Old Thurstanites giants, it was decided by the OBU as pertinent to construct a memorial/monument within the college premises to salute these heroes.

The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was held on Monday 20th September 2008 with the participation of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Jayantha Wickramaratne, as Chief Guest along with other distinguished VVIP’s.  The Ceremony was attended by a large gathering of present and past students of the College and parents and well wishers.

War Heroes Monument Unveiling Ceremony will be held in January 2009 with the participation of a large gathering with His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse, The President of the Democratic Socialist  Republic of Sri Lanka, who himself is an old Thurstanite gracing the occasion.

All are welcome to join us! For more information and details you may contact the under mentioned member of the Organizing Committee –

Inter-School Under-17 Tournament Quarter-Finals

(NEWS Source – The Island – online sports)Inter-School Under-17 Tournament Quarter-Finals
Kavinda and spinners lead Thurstan to semis
by Reemus Fernando

Nuwan Kavinda continued his blistering form in the knockout stage with a solid 60 runs (56 balls) inclusive of nine fours and two sixes for Thurstan College to score a huge six wicket win over last year two-day tournament finalists St. Peter?s College in their Inter-School Under-17 Limited Over Cricket Tournament quarter-final played at the CCC Grounds yesterday.

Chasing 176 runs to win, Thurstan reached the target for the lose of four wickets with 16 overs to spare as Kavinda combined with wicketkeeper bat Supun Nawaratne for a valuable 93 run stand to provide a solid foundation for their victory march.

Chasing the target, they were never under pressure except when St. Peter?s opening pace combination troubled them for a brief period. Trishan Fernando had Udara Munasinghe lbw when the score was at 13 but from then on Kavinda and Nawaratne defied the Petes piling runs at will. Incidentally, Kavinda scored a century in their pre quarter finals as well.

When Thurstan were well set, the Petes hit back with two wickets to leave them at 106 for three, but with seven wickets in hand, it couldn?t hinder Thurstans? drive for the kill.

Prabodha Arthavidu and Javid Siyambalapitiya, who combined for an unbeaten 34 runs partnership, took Thurstan home for a comfortable six wicket win.

Although the batsmen hogged the limelight, it was Thurstan?s spinners combined with their active wicket keeper Supun Nawaratne who set the stage for their victory when they reduced St. Peter?s to 175 runs bowling some tight spells.

Deciding to bat first the Peterites captained by Akshu Fernando were off to a blistering start with the opening pair taking on the pacemen to put on 40 runs in six overs. But they were soon tottering when the spinners were introduced. It was off-spinner Ishara Wijeratne who did the initial damage.

He had the tournament?s highest run scorer Andry Berenger caught by wicketkeeper Supun Nawaratne for 24 and Dirk Muller caught off his own bowling in successive deliveries. While Wijeratne?s impressive 10 over spell conceded just 10 runs (his first five overs cost only a solitary run), leg-spinner Sachintha Wijesinghe gave away just 10 runs in his nine overs.

These tight spells controlled the most important phase of the match and the Petes struggled to break the spell cast by the Thurstan spinners. They lost wickets at regular intervals and the only batsman to top 40 runs was Nilochana Perera (46). Nawaratne accounted for four dismissals and also had a hand in two run outs.
